Exploring the evolution of girlhood, spirituality, and image-making through film photography, writing, and myth.

Girl Tarot is a photographic study of the tarot’s archetypes, seen through the reality of modern womanhood and girlhood.

It looks at how the sacred and the everyday overlap, how beauty, pain, and belief live inside the same image. The work is personal but also collective, a mirror held up to what it means to grow, change, and be seen.

The project centres on a group of six young women, all eighteen and nineteen, who move through life together, a constellation of friendship, conversation, and becoming. Each image grows from their shared exchanges with Ruby, shaped by real experiences, raw emotion, and the quiet force of girlhood itself.

Every photograph begins with research, writing, and visual development. From these foundations come the creative direction, styling, make up, casting, and location design. Each work is shot on medium format film, developed, scanned, and edited by Ruby, then will eventually be printed as fine art pieces. The process is deliberate and exacting, built on time, craft, and integrity.

Girl Tarot will exist as a fine art photography book, a tarot card deck, and a physical exhibition. The exhibition will also offer space for selected brands to present their own pieces, garments, jewellery, beauty, or objects, curated within the visual language of the work. Participating brands will be credited in the published book, on exhibition posters, and across post exhibition marketing and social media.

Only collaborators whose image, quality, and foundation align with the essence of Girl Tarot will be involved. This is a work built from real connection and precision, a study of friendship, womanhood, and art as something lived rather than manufactured. For more information read below.

Tarot card mock up

Girl Tarot invites a small selection of fashion, jewellery, and beauty brands to become part of the world being built, one rooted in sisterhood, spirituality, and the beauty of becoming.

Each photograph in the series functions as both image and ritual. The garments, accessories, and objects worn or held by the girls become symbolic, extensions of the archetypes they embody.

Each image in the series follows its own story. Every photograph will be set in a different location with its own atmosphere, colour palette, and sense of place. Each scene will be crafted with a unique set design, makeup direction, and styling that reflects the archetype being portrayed.

We are currently seeking partnership with brands whose visual identity and values align with the ethos of Girl Tarot: connection, craftsmanship, feminine mythology, and the sacred within the everyday.

Selected collaborators will have the opportunity to have their pieces featured in the Girl Tarot book, exhibition, and tarot deck imagery. They will also have the opportunity to have their garments, jewellery, or objects displayed at the physical exhibition itself. Each brand will be credited across exhibition posters, catalogue features, and post exhibition publications, and integrated into the visual storytelling shared across Ruby Johnson’s network and platforms.

Dates: The project creation is set to run through until late December and exhibit in early 2025 in Byron Bay.

What We are Looking For:

We’re open to working with designers, jewellery makers, beauty labels, and artists who feel drawn to the world of Girl Tarot.

This might include clothing, shoes, lingerie, makeup, hair, jewellery, bedding, accessories, objects, or small details that can live within the photographs and the exhibition space.

Each collaboration will be considered carefully and chosen for how naturally it fits the story being told. It’s also important to note that we are only partnering with sustainable businesses that create quality pieces and support the narrative of an ethical womanhood that Girl Tarot stands for. We do not wish to work with fast fashion or large corporate companies that contribute to the idolisation of a starving culture or to climate change.
